How universal life works

Universal life combines permanent insurance with a policy investment account. Deposits, within tax and contract limits, are credited to selected investment options, insurance charges and fees are deducted from the policy value.

Flexibility creates responsibility. If deposits or returns are lower than assumed—or insurance costs are higher under the chosen design—the policy may require additional funding to remain in force.

Plain-language takeaway

An illustration is a scenario, not a promise. Separate guaranteed values from assumed returns.

Who should consider it?

Universal life is generally considered for a clear permanent need and by people able to tolerate investment variability and review the contract regularly.

  • Estate and tax-liquidity planning
  • Corporate-owned insurance strategies
  • Large permanent needs
  • Clients seeking adjustable deposits or death-benefit options
  • Clients with stable cash flow and professional tax advice

Understand the insurance charges

Policies may use level cost of insurance, yearly renewable term charges, or another schedule. Early costs, later costs and long-term guarantees can differ dramatically. Request illustrations under lower-return assumptions and with no additional deposits.

  • Cost-of-insurance basis
  • Administration and investment fees
  • Premium taxes
  • Surrender charges
  • Guaranteed maximum charges

Investment options and risk

Options may include daily interest, guaranteed-interest and index-linked accounts. Index-linked does not mean the policy directly owns the index, and returns can be reduced by fees or subject to floors and caps. Policy values can be insufficient if performance disappoints.

Tax treatment needs professional review

Canadian life policies can receive tax-advantaged treatment when they remain exempt under tax rules. Deposits, withdrawals, loans, transfers and changes to coverage can have tax effects. Insurance advice should be coordinated with qualified tax and legal professionals.

Universal life versus whole life

Universal life may offer more transparent investment choice and funding flexibility. Whole life often offers stronger guaranteed schedules and less day-to-day policy management. Neither is universally better, suitability depends on the identified insurance need and risk profile.

How to monitor the policy

Review annual statements and request updated in-force illustrations. Confirm current values, deductions, projected lapse age and whether planned deposits remain sufficient.

  • Actual versus illustrated return
  • Current insurance deductions
  • Tax-exempt status
  • Beneficiary and ownership
  • Stress test at lower returns

Questions, answered

What people usually ask

Can universal life lapse even if I paid the planned premium?

It can if the contract relies on policy values that become insufficient for ongoing charges. Guarantees vary, so review the illustration and contract carefully.

Are index-linked returns guaranteed?

No. The crediting formula, fees, caps and floors are defined by the contract, and past index results do not guarantee future credits.

Can I withdraw the investment value?

Often yes, subject to contract limits, tax consequences and an impact on future values or coverage.

How often should it be reviewed?

At least annually and after major deposits, withdrawals, ownership changes or life events.
