Travel · Plan for the trip—not the emergency
Travel Insurance
Medical and trip coverage for Canadians travelling outside Canada.
- Emergency medical
- Trip cancellation and interruption
- Single-trip and annual plans
What travel insurance can protect
Travel insurance can combine emergency medical benefits with non-medical benefits such as cancellation, interruption, baggage delay and travel accident coverage. Plans vary widely, do not assume a credit card or group plan covers the full trip.
Who should review coverage?
Anyone travelling outside their home province should understand provincial limits and existing benefits.
- Families taking one major trip
- Frequent travellers considering an annual plan
- Snowbirds
- Travellers with expensive non-refundable bookings
- People with stable medical conditions needing specialized coverage
Emergency medical coverage
Confirm the maximum, deductible, pre-existing-condition stability, exclusions, duration and requirement to contact assistance. Provincial plans may pay only a limited amount outside Canada.
Cancellation versus interruption
Cancellation applies when a covered event prevents departure. Interruption applies after the trip starts. Covered reasons are listed and can include certain illnesses, deaths, weather events or travel advisories, fear of travel is not normally covered.
Check credit-card and employer plans
Confirm who is insured, trip-length limit, age limits, pre-existing-condition wording, whether the card paid for the trip, and the maximum per person. Top-up coverage may be available.
Activities and destinations
Adventure sports, paid work, alcohol-related incidents and travel to locations under advisories may be excluded. Ask about skiing, scuba, climbing, cruises and remote evacuation before purchase.
If something goes wrong
Call the assistance centre, document the event, mitigate further loss and keep original receipts. For cancellation claims, notify suppliers quickly and request available refunds first.

Questions, answered
What people usually ask
Do I need insurance within Canada?
Provincial coverage may not pay every ambulance, transfer or private-service cost. Trip interruption benefits can also apply within Canada.
Is my credit card enough?
Maybe, but verify insured persons, trip length, age, pre-existing conditions, payment requirements and limits.
What is an annual multi-trip plan?
It covers multiple trips during a year up to a maximum duration per trip. Longer trips may require a top-up.
Can I cancel for any reason?
Standard plans cover listed events only. Cancel-for-any-reason benefits, when available, have separate limits and purchase deadlines.
