What is critical illness insurance?

Critical illness insurance can pay a one-time benefit when an insured person is diagnosed with a condition covered by the contract and meets the definition and survival period. Common examples include life-threatening cancer, heart attack and stroke, but the list and definitions vary.

The benefit is not reimbursement for receipts. It may support mortgage payments, time away from work, treatment travel, child care, home changes or savings.

Who should consider it?

Consider the financial gap that could remain even with provincial health coverage, disability benefits and workplace insurance.

  • Self-employed people without paid sick leave
  • Families with limited emergency savings
  • Primary earners or caregivers
  • Business owners funding key-person risk
  • People with high fixed monthly costs

Coverage is definition-based

A diagnosis alone may not be enough. The condition must satisfy the policy wording and any required survival period. Early-stage or less severe conditions may receive a partial benefit only under some contracts. Review definitions before applying.

Plain-language takeaway

The policy definition—not the everyday name of an illness—decides whether a claim is payable.

How much coverage might be useful?

Estimate income lost during recovery, uncovered care, travel, debt payments, child care and a cash buffer. Subtract sick leave, disability benefits and liquid savings. A common planning period is several months to two years, but the correct period is personal.

Policy options to compare

Plans differ in covered conditions, term, return-of-premium options, recurrence benefits and partial payments. Return-of-premium features add cost and have strict eligibility rules.

  • Number and definition of conditions
  • Survival periods
  • Partial or early-assistance benefits
  • Term and renewal schedule
  • Return-of-premium conditions

How it differs from disability insurance

Critical illness pays after a covered diagnosis whether or not you can work. Disability insurance generally pays a monthly benefit when sickness or injury prevents you from working under the policy definition. They cover different triggers and can complement each other.

Applying and claiming

Applications may ask about health, tests, symptoms and family history. At claim, medical records are reviewed against the contract definition. Full disclosure and current beneficiary or ownership details help avoid preventable issues.

Questions, answered

What people usually ask

Can I use the benefit for anything?

A personal lump-sum benefit is generally unrestricted, though tax treatment and business-owned policies should be confirmed with qualified professionals.

Does it cover every cancer?

No. The cancer must meet the policy definition, certain early-stage cancers may be excluded or pay a partial benefit.

What is a survival period?

It is the time the insured must survive after diagnosis or an insured event before the benefit becomes payable.

Does it replace disability insurance?

No. Critical illness is diagnosis-based and typically lump sum, disability insurance is work-capacity based and usually monthly.
